Airport lounge access with Indian credit cards
By Ganesh ·
How free airport lounge access works on Indian credit and debit cards. Domestic and international visits, spend conditions, Priority Pass, what to show at the desk, why entry gets declined, and other ways in.
The short answer: many Indian credit and debit cards include free airport lounge visits, usually a few domestic visits a quarter, and on premium cards some international visits through Priority Pass or a card network programme. Most banks now tie these visits to a minimum spend in the previous month or quarter, so check your card's current terms in the bank app before you fly. At the lounge you show your card and boarding pass; a small verification charge (often ₹2) may be taken and refunded.
Card benefits change often. This guide explains how lounge access works; it doesn't recommend specific cards. Always check your bank's latest terms.
How card lounge access works in India
- Who provides it: your bank, through a card network (Visa, Mastercard, RuPay, Diners/Amex) or a lounge programme such as Priority Pass.
- Domestic visits: common on mid-range and premium cards, typically a few per quarter.
- International visits: usually on premium cards, via a Priority Pass (or similar) membership the bank issues, or a fixed number of visits per year.
- Spend conditions: since 2023–24, many banks require you to have spent a minimum amount on the card in the previous month or quarter to unlock the next period's visits.
- Add-on and guest visits: some cards include add-on cardholders or guests; others charge for guests.
How to check what your card offers
- Open your bank app or website and look for the card's "benefits" or "lounge" section. It often shows how many visits are left this quarter and whether the spend condition is met.
- Check the card network's lounge list (Visa, Mastercard and RuPay each publish eligible lounges and cards).
- For Priority Pass or similar, download the programme's app, activate the membership the bank gave you, and use the digital card.
- Note which terminal your flight leaves from. Lounges are airside, after security, and not every terminal has one on your programme.
At the lounge
- Show your boarding pass and the physical card (or the Priority Pass digital card). Some lounges ask for ID.
- For card-based entry, the desk may run a small charge (often ₹2) to verify the card; it's typically refunded.
- Lounges can stop entry when full at peak hours; arrive early or have a backup plan.
- Most lounges allow entry up to a few hours before departure; some limit how long you stay.
What you get
Seating, Wi-Fi, charging points, a buffet or à la carte food, non-alcoholic drinks, and at many international lounges, alcohol, showers and quiet zones. Quality varies a lot between airports and terminals.
Other ways into a lounge
- Paid entry: buy at the desk or online: roughly ₹1,000–2,500 in India, more abroad.
- Airline status or business class: includes the airline's own lounge.
- Lounge memberships: Priority Pass and similar memberships can be bought directly, useful for very frequent flyers.
- Debit cards: some debit cards still include domestic visits, often with balance or spend conditions.
Tips
- Check your eligibility the night before, not at the lounge door, benefits are often revised.
- Track visits per quarter so you don't run out before a big trip.
- If you're connecting, check whether your programme covers lounges in the transit airport.
- Don't overspend just to unlock lounge visits, a paid visit is often cheaper than chasing a spend target.
- Add your flights to your Sancharees trip; the departure time and terminal sit on the day's timeline so you can plan time for the lounge.
FAQ
Do I need to pay anything with a credit card lounge visit?
Usually just a small verification charge (often ₹2) that is refunded. Guests may be charged in full.
Why was my lounge access declined?
Often because the previous period's spend condition wasn't met, the quarter's visits are used up, the card isn't on that lounge's list, or the lounge is full.
Can I use lounge access on a domestic flight with an international programme?
It depends on the programme and lounge; many Indian domestic lounges are on network programmes rather than Priority Pass. Check the list for your terminal.
