Best places to visit in June

The best places to visit in June: Ladakh, Spiti, Kashmir, Himachal, the Valley of Flowers and Auli, monsoon Coorg and Munnar, plus Bali, Europe, Central Asia and Mauritius, and where to avoid.

The short answer: June is the month for the high Himalaya. Ladakh, Spiti, Kashmir, the upper valleys of Himachal (Manali, Sissu, Tirthan, Jibhi) and Uttarakhand's Valley of Flowers and Auli are at their best before the monsoon reaches the north. In the south, monsoon lovers head to Coorg, Wayanad and Munnar for misty, green hills, and the Western Ghats waterfalls come alive by late June. Abroad, Bali, Europe, Central Asia, Georgia and Mauritius are good choices. Avoid Japan's rainy season, the Gulf heat, and beach holidays on India's west coast.

Weather and opening dates below are typical, not guaranteed. Check before you go.

What June looks like in India

The south-west monsoon usually reaches Kerala in early June and spreads north through the month, arriving in Delhi around the end of June. That makes June two very different trips: dry, sunny and cold in the trans-Himalaya (Ladakh, Spiti, Lahaul), and wet and lush along the Western Ghats and the North-East. Many schools in North India are still on holiday, so the hills stay busy.

Best places in India in June

1. Ladakh

The best single month for Ladakh: the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways are normally open, Pangong, Nubra and Tso Moriri camps are running, and the rain-shadow keeps it dry. Book flights early, June is peak season. Rest two days in Leh to acclimatise.

2. Spiti and Lahaul

Kunzum La usually opens around June, making the Manali–Kaza circuit possible: Chandratal lake, Key monastery, Kibber, Langza and Dhankar. Roads are rough; go with an experienced driver.

3. Kashmir

Long, warm days in Srinagar; meadows at Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Gulmarg; the drive to Gurez or Doodhpathri for quieter valleys. The Amarnath Yatra usually begins around late June or early July, so roads and stays near Pahalgam and Baltal get busy.

4. Himachal's higher valleys

Manali and Sissu via the Atal Tunnel, the Tirthan and Jibhi valleys, Kasol and Kheerganga, Bir Billing (paragliding usually pauses for the monsoon from July). Shimla and Kasauli are pleasant early in the month.

5. Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib

The Valley of Flowers National Park in Uttarakhand usually opens on 1 June; early-season flowers appear from late June, peaking in July–August. Combine it with Hemkund Sahib from Ghangaria.

6. Auli and Chopta

Green meadows and views of Nanda Devi from Auli; the Tungnath–Chandrashila trek from Chopta. Go early in June before the rains make the roads slippery.

7. Coorg, Wayanad and Munnar in the monsoon

If you like rain, the Western Ghats are magical: mist, waterfalls, coffee and tea estates glowing green, and low hotel prices. Expect leeches on walks and occasional road closures after heavy rain.

8. Meghalaya

Cherrapunji and Mawsynram are among the wettest places on earth. June is for travellers who want to see the waterfalls in full flow. Root-bridge treks are slippery; go with a local guide.

9. Gangtok and North Sikkim

Possible in early June before the heaviest rain; landslides can close the road to Lachung and Yumthang later in the season.

Best places abroad in June

  • Bali: dry and sunny; busier from July, so June is a sweet spot.
  • Europe: long days, all mountain lifts open in Switzerland and Austria; book ahead and expect high season prices from late June.
  • Central Asia and Georgia: Almaty, Issyk-Kul (Kyrgyzstan) and the Georgian mountains are at their best.
  • Mauritius and Seychelles: their cooler, drier winter season, good value.
  • Iceland and Scotland: almost endless daylight for road trips.

Where to avoid in June

  • Japan: the rainy season (tsuyu) covers most of the country in June.
  • Dubai and the Gulf: extreme heat.
  • Goa, Konkan and Kerala beaches: rough seas and closed shacks, though monsoon Goa has its own fans.
  • Rajasthan and the plains: hot and humid until the rains break.

Practical tips for June trips

  • Watch the monsoon onset maps from the India Meteorological Department before booking hills in the Ghats or the North-East.
  • Keep a buffer day for landslides on mountain roads.
  • Pack a rain jacket and quick-dry clothes, even for Ladakh (for the drive in).
  • Plan the route in Sancharees: each day's drive time is shown, and the plan stays viewable offline in valleys with no signal.
