Best places to visit in May

The best places to visit in May: Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Ladakh, Ooty, Munnar and Coorg in India, plus Bali, Bhutan, Japan, Central Asia and Europe abroad, and where to avoid.

The short answer: the best places to visit in May in India are the hills: Kashmir (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam), Himachal (Manali, Shimla, Dharamshala), Uttarakhand (Nainital, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Chopta), Sikkim and Darjeeling, Meghalaya, and in the south Ooty, Kodaikanal, Munnar and Coorg. Ladakh opens up by flight, and Spiti via Kinnaur. Abroad, May is a good month for Bali, Bhutan, Japan, Central Asia and Europe before the July crowds. Skip Rajasthan, Goa and the plains. They're at their hottest.

Weather and opening dates below are typical, not guaranteed. Check before you go.

Why May is a big travel month

School holidays across most of India start in late April or May, so this is the peak family-travel season. Indian searches for "places to visit in May" climb from April. Hill stations fill up and prices rise, so book stays and trains early, or pick slightly less famous hills nearby.

Best places in India in May

1. Kashmir: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg

Spring turns to early summer: shikara rides on Dal Lake, the Mughal gardens in bloom, snow still at the top of the Gulmarg gondola, and green meadows in Pahalgam and Sonamarg. Days are pleasant (around 20–28 °C in Srinagar).

2. Himachal: Manali, Shimla, Dharamshala, Tirthan valley

Manali is the classic choice (Solang valley, Old Manali, and Rohtang or the Atal Tunnel to Sissu). For fewer crowds, try the Tirthan valley, Barot, or McLeodganj and the Triund trek above Dharamshala.

3. Uttarakhand: Nainital, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Chopta

Nainital and Mussoorie are closest to Delhi; Rishikesh is ideal for rafting before the monsoon; Chopta and the Tungnath–Chandrashila trek have rhododendron forests and Himalayan views. The Char Dham Yatra is in full swing. Register online if you go.

4. Sikkim and Darjeeling

Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake, and the Yumthang valley in North Sikkim, where rhododendrons flower in spring. Darjeeling's tea gardens and toy train are pleasant before the monsoon arrives in June.

5. Meghalaya

Shillong, Cherrapunji (Sohra), the living root bridges and the clear Umngot river at Dawki. Pre-monsoon showers start in May, which keeps the waterfalls full.

6. Ladakh

Fly to Leh for the start of the season; most high roads and Pangong camps open in May, though the Manali–Leh road often opens only in late May or June. Rest two days on arrival to acclimatise.

7. Spiti valley

Reach it via Shimla and Kinnaur (the Manali side via Kunzum La usually opens later). Kaza, Key monastery, Chandratal and Langza are cold, stark and spectacular.

8. Ooty and Kodaikanal

The Nilgiris and Palani hills host their summer festivals and flower shows in May. They are very busy; in recent summers vehicles have needed an e-pass to enter during peak periods, so check before driving up.

9. Munnar, Coorg and Chikmagalur

Tea and coffee hills that stay pleasant while the plains bake. Munnar's Eravikulam park reopens after the calving-season closure; Coorg has waterfalls and homestays; Chikmagalur has Mullayanagiri peak.

10. Tawang and Arunachal

Sela Pass, Tawang monastery and high lakes, a long road trip from Guwahati. Indians need an online Inner Line Permit.

Best places abroad in May

  • Bali: the dry season begins; good value before July–August.
  • Bhutan: clear spring weather in Paro, Thimphu and Punakha; Indians need no visa, but a per-night Sustainable Development Fee applies.
  • Japan: after Golden Week (early May), the weather is mild and fresh green fills the parks before the June rainy season.
  • Central Asia and the Caucasus: Almaty, Tashkent–Samarkand and Georgia are green and mild, with easy visa rules for Indians and short flights.
  • Europe: Switzerland, Paris, Amsterdam and Italy are comfortable and cheaper than in summer; book Schengen visa appointments well ahead.
  • Singapore and Malaysia: hot and humid, but very easy with children, theme parks, aquariums and malls.

Places to avoid in May

  • Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi–Agra and central India: 40 °C+ heat.
  • Goa and most beaches: hot and humid; many shacks close by late May.
  • Dubai and the Gulf: extremely hot (though hotel deals are good).

Practical tips for May trips

  • Book hill-station hotels and trains 6–8 weeks ahead; Tatkal is a gamble in this season.
  • Start drives early to beat traffic jams on hill roads (Manali, Mussoorie, Ooty).
  • Carry a light jacket even in May, evenings in the hills are cool.
  • Plan the whole family trip in Sancharees, add your train and hotel bookings, and share the link with relatives so everyone has the plan.
