Best road trip apps for India
By Ganesh ·
The apps that help most on an Indian road trip. Google Maps and Mappls for navigation, Wanderlog, Roadtrippers and Sancharees for planning, plus FASTag, fuel, documents and weather apps, with what each is good and not so good at.
The short answer: there's no single perfect road-trip app. Most people combine a navigation app with a planning app. For navigation in India, Google Maps is the default (traffic, offline maps, toll estimates on many routes), and Mappls by MapmyIndia is a strong India-focused alternative. For planning the days, stays and bookings, and sharing them with your group, use a trip planner such as Wanderlog or Sancharees. Roadtrippers is popular but built mainly for North America. Add a FASTag app, a fuel app and a weather app, and you're covered.
App features and plans change often. Check each app's store listing for current details. We make Sancharees, so we've tried to describe the others fairly; tell us if anything is out of date.
Navigation apps
Google Maps
- Good at: turn-by-turn navigation, live traffic, alternative routes, offline maps you download in advance, and estimated toll prices on many Indian routes; finding fuel pumps, restaurants and EV chargers along the way.
- Watch out for: shortcuts through narrow village or forest roads, and over-optimistic times on ghat roads. Check the route before accepting a "faster" detour.
Mappls (MapmyIndia)
- Good at: India-specific map data and navigation, offline maps, and road-safety and road-condition alerts; useful in areas where you want a second opinion.
- Watch out for: features and coverage can differ from Google Maps; try it on a short drive first.
Waze
- Community-reported traffic and hazards work best where many local drivers use it; usage in India is lower than Google Maps, so reports can be sparse outside big cities.
Trip-planning apps
Wanderlog
- Good at: building an itinerary with places on a map, collaborating with friends, importing reservations and keeping notes; widely used for international trips.
- Watch out for: some features (for example offline access and route optimisation) are part of its paid plan. Check what's included.
Roadtrippers
- Good at: discovering attractions, quirky stops and campgrounds along a route.
- Watch out for: it's designed mainly for the US, Canada and a few other countries, so its suggestions and data are thinner for India; adding many waypoints needs a paid plan.
Sancharees
- Good at: planning day by day on a map, with road drive times between stops and a warning when a day is packed; nightly stays on the timeline; forwarding booking emails into the right day; inviting co-travellers and voting on places; reading the last opened trip offline; opening each day's route in Google Maps or exporting a KML for Google My Maps; sharing an unlisted link with family.
- Watch out for: it's a planner, not a navigation app. Use Google Maps or Mappls for turn-by-turn directions. Offline is view-only; editing needs a connection.
Useful extras for Indian roads
- FASTag: your issuing bank's app or the NHAI / FASTag apps to check balance and recharge before a long drive.
- Fuel: the oil companies' apps (IndianOil, HPCL, BPCL) show nearby pumps and loyalty offers.
- Documents: DigiLocker and mParivahan hold digital copies of your licence and registration that are accepted for many checks.
- Weather: the India Meteorological Department's Mausam app and alerts for rain and landslide warnings in the hills.
- EV charging: charging-network apps and the EV filters in Google Maps, if you're driving electric.
A simple setup that works
- Plan the route and nights in a trip planner; check each day's driving time and move stops off packed days.
- Forward hotel bookings into the plan and share it with everyone in the car.
- Download offline maps for the region in your navigation app.
- Each morning, open that day's route in Google Maps (or Mappls) and drive.
