Best time to visit Japan
By Ganesh ·
When to visit Japan. The seasons, a month-by-month guide, cherry blossom and autumn leaf timing, Golden Week and Obon crowds, the rainy season, and the best months for first trips, snow and budget travel.
The short answer: the best times to visit Japan are spring (late March to May) and autumn (October to early December). Cherry blossoms usually peak in Tokyo and Kyoto in late March or early April, and autumn leaves in mid-November to early December. Avoid Golden Week (late April to early May) and the mid-August Obon holidays if you dislike crowds, and expect the rainy season in June to mid-July and heat and typhoons in August–September. Winter is cold but clear, and the best season for snow in Hokkaido and the Japan Alps.
Bloom and foliage dates move every year. Check the forecasts before you book.

Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders need a visa for Japan. Apply through the Japanese embassy or consulate's authorised visa centre, or through the online eVISA where it is available to you. Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan's official site before applying. Processing usually takes about a week; allow more time in March–April.
Practical tips
- Vegetarians: look for Buddhist temple food (shojin ryori), Indian restaurants in big cities, and ask about dashi (fish stock) in sauces.
- Get an IC card (Suica, PASMO or ICOCA) on your phone or as a card for trains and convenience stores.
- Compare a JR Pass with individual tickets for your actual route. It doesn't always pay off.
- Plan the trip in Sancharees: add the Shinkansen and hotel bookings, and each day shows typical weather for your dates.
