Best time to visit Ladakh, month by month
By Ganesh ·
When to visit Ladakh. A month-by-month guide with temperatures, road openings on the Manali and Srinagar highways, festivals, the winter Chadar trek and snow leopards, and the best month for each kind of trip.
The short answer: the best time to visit Ladakh is May to September, when the high roads and lakeside camps are open and days are sunny and mild. June and July are the peak months, with the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways both normally open. September brings clear skies, autumn colours and fewer crowds. Winter (December to February) is extremely cold but has its own draws: the frozen Pangong lake, the Chadar trek and snow leopard tours, by flight only.
Road opening dates and weather vary from year to year. Check before you go.

Month by month
- January–February: deep winter. The Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar river and snow leopard tracking in Hemis and Ulley run now, with specialised operators. Pangong is frozen. Many hotels close; book heated rooms.
- March: still cold, sometimes snowy; good snow leopard sightings continue; very few tourists.
- April: apricot trees blossom in the Indus and Sham valleys; Leh starts to wake up.
- May: season opens; Pangong and Nubra camps begin; Srinagar–Leh usually open.
- June: peak begins; both highways normally open; Hemis festival falls in June or July depending on the lunar calendar; Sindhu Darshan festival in Leh.
- July: peak; ideal for bikes and road trips; expect busy Pangong and Khardung La.
- August: Ladakh stays dry, but heavy rain on the Himachal side can block the Manali road. Keep buffer days.
- September: a favourite for photographers: clear air, autumn colours and thinner crowds; the Ladakh Festival in Leh.
- October: cold nights, most lakeside camps close by mid-month, and the Manali side may close with early snow.
- November–December: quiet and very cold; Losar (Ladakhi New Year) falls around December–January.

Indian searches for Ladakh peak around June and July, so book flights and stays two to three months ahead for those months.
Things to know in any season
- Leh is at about 3,500 m: rest 36–48 hours after flying in, and talk to a doctor before the trip.
- Indians need an online Inner Line Permit for Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri, Hanle and Turtuk.
- Sun is fierce even when it's cold. Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm are essential.
- Only postpaid connections from outside Ladakh tend to work; expect no signal in many valleys.
- Plan the route in Sancharees: drive times between stops are shown, and the plan stays viewable offline.
