Coorg at a glance

Coorg is the hilly Kodagu district of south-west Karnataka, on the Western Ghats between Mysuru and the coast. Its headquarters, Madikeri (also called Mercara), sits at about 1,100 m. Coffee and pepper estates cover the hills, the Kaveri river begins here, and the Kodava community's food and traditions make it feel quite different from the rest of Karnataka. It is the favourite long-weekend escape from Bengaluru.

Places to visit in Coorg

Madikeri town

  • Raja's Seat: a garden viewpoint over valleys and the Western Ghats, best at sunset; there is a musical fountain in the evening.
  • Madikeri Fort: a 19th-century fort with a small museum, in the middle of town.
  • Omkareshwara Temple: a temple built in a blend of Islamic and Kerala styles, with a tank in front.
  • Abbey (Abbi) Falls: about 8 km out of town through coffee estates; a short walk down steps to a viewing bridge. Fullest from July to October.

Kushalnagar side (east)

  • Dubare Elephant Camp: on the Kaveri, run by the forest department. Come in the morning to watch the elephants being bathed and fed; the camp is reached by a short boat crossing.
  • Namdroling Monastery, Bylakuppe: the "Golden Temple" at one of India's largest Tibetan settlements, with huge gilded statues. Dress modestly and keep quiet inside.
  • Nisargadhama: a bamboo-covered island on the Kaveri reached by a hanging bridge, good for an easy walk.
  • Harangi Dam: a quick stop if you are passing.

Talacauvery and Bhagamandala (west)

Talacauvery, high in the Brahmagiri hills about 45 km from Madikeri, is revered as the source of the Kaveri. Steps lead up the hill behind the temple for sweeping views. Bhagamandala, 8 km below, has the Triveni Sangama, where three rivers meet, and the Bhagandeshwara temple.

Viewpoints and treks

  • Mandalpatti: grassland ridge above the clouds, reached by jeep on a rough road from near Abbey Falls. Go for sunrise.
  • Tadiandamol: Coorg's highest peak (around 1,750 m), a full-day trek near Kakkabe. Forest-department permits and rules apply; check if the trail is open.
  • Kotebetta and Nishani Motte: other popular treks; permits and seasonal closures apply.

South Coorg

Iruppu Falls, near Srimangala, sits at the edge of the Brahmagiri sanctuary. Nagarhole National Park is nearby for forest-department safaris. This side is quieter and ideal for coffee-estate stays.

How to reach Coorg

  • From Bengaluru: about 250–270 km, 5–6 hours via Mysuru and Kushalnagar. KSRTC runs frequent buses, including overnight ones, to Madikeri.
  • By air: Bengaluru has the most flights. Mangaluru (about 140 km) and Kannur (about 100 km) are closer alternatives; Mysuru airport has limited flights.
  • By train: Mysuru is the nearest major station (about 120 km), then road.
  • Getting around: sights are spread out; hire a car or a taxi for the day.

Best time to visit Coorg

October to March is the best season: cool, clear and ideal for treks and estate walks. March–April brings coffee blossom, when the estates smell of jasmine for a few days after the first showers. April–May is warmer but still a popular summer-holiday escape. June to September is a heavy monsoon. Waterfalls are at their best and everything is green, but treks close and landslides can affect roads. Search interest peaks in May and December, so book weekends early.

Sample 3-day Coorg itinerary

  1. Day 1 (Bengaluru to Coorg via Kushalnagar): stop at Namdroling Monastery and Nisargadhama, reach Madikeri for Raja's Seat at sunset.
  2. Day 2 (Madikeri and the west): Mandalpatti at sunrise, Abbey Falls, Madikeri Fort and Omkareshwara Temple, then an afternoon at Talacauvery and Bhagamandala.
  3. Day 3 (Dubare and home): Dubare Elephant Camp in the morning, a coffee-estate walk or plantation tour, and drive back.

Practical tips

  • Stay on a coffee estate homestay at least one night. Breakfast, estate walks and Kodava home food are half the experience.
  • Try pandi curry (pork) with akki roti or kadambuttu (rice dumplings), and buy coffee, pepper and homemade wine from estate shops.
  • Most sights close by 5–6 pm; start early, especially on weekends when Abbey Falls and Raja's Seat get crowded.
  • Carry rain gear and leech socks from June to October.
  • Drive carefully on narrow estate roads and avoid driving in the dark in heavy rain.

Plan it on Sancharees

Add Madikeri, Dubare, Bylakuppe and Talacauvery as stops in a Sancharees trip to see drive times, keep your homestay booking with the plan, and share it with your group.
