Darjeeling at a glance
Darjeeling sits at about 2,000 m in the far north of West Bengal, on a ridge facing Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain. It is famous for its tea, its UNESCO-listed toy train and its mountain views. The town is steep and compact; most sights are a short taxi ride or a walk apart.
Places to visit in Darjeeling
Tiger Hill
About 11 km from town, Tiger Hill is where everyone goes before dawn to watch the first light turn Kanchenjunga gold; on very clear days Everest is visible far to the west. Leave around 4 am (earlier in summer), dress warmly, and expect crowds and a small viewing-gallery fee. Clear views are most likely from October to December.
Batasia Loop
A spiral where the toy train loops around a garden with the Gorkha War Memorial at its centre, and panoramic views of the range. Usually combined with Tiger Hill and Ghum on the morning tour.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
The narrow-gauge "toy train" from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) to Darjeeling, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, climbs about 88 km through loops and zig-zags and takes most of a day. Most visitors take the shorter joy ride from Darjeeling to Ghum and back via Batasia Loop (about two hours, steam or diesel). Book on IRCTC well ahead for holidays.
Ghum Monastery
Yiga Choeling, the best-known monastery in the area, with a large Maitreya Buddha statue. Ghum station nearby is the highest point on the railway.
Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park and the HMI
The zoo is known for its breeding programmes for red pandas and snow leopards. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, in the same complex, has a museum on Everest expeditions and Tenzing Norgay. The complex closes one day a week (traditionally Thursday). Check before going.
Japanese Peace Pagoda
A white stupa on a hillside with gilded Buddhas and calm views, a short drive from the town centre.
Happy Valley Tea Estate
One of Darjeeling's oldest tea gardens, close to town. Walk the slopes and taste first-flush and second-flush teas at the factory (open on most days; best during the plucking season, March to November).
Chowrasta, the Mall and Observatory Hill
The open square of Chowrasta is the social centre of Darjeeling, with the Mall running around Observatory Hill and its Mahakal Temple. Stop at the old bakeries and tea rooms nearby.
Rangeet Valley ropeway
A cable car down towards the tea gardens of the Rangeet valley, with long views when the weather is clear. It can close for maintenance or bad weather.
Day trips from Darjeeling
- Mirik (about 45 km): a lake surrounded by pine forest and orange orchards.
- Kalimpong (about 50 km): a quieter hill town with monasteries, nurseries and Deolo Hill.
- Lepchajagat and Sittong: small forest villages and homestays for a calm night.
- Sandakphu trek: a multi-day trek or land-rover trip from Maneybhanjan to the highest point in West Bengal, with views of four of the world's five highest peaks.
How to reach Darjeeling
- By air: Bagdogra airport (near Siliguri) is about 65–70 km away, roughly 3 hours by road.
- By train: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the main railhead, with trains from Kolkata, Delhi and across India. From NJP it is 3–4 hours by taxi or shared jeep, or most of a day by toy train.
- By road: shared jeeps and private taxis run from Siliguri and NJP. Hill roads can be slow and are sometimes closed by landslides in the monsoon.
Best time to visit Darjeeling
March to May brings spring flowers and pleasant days, with some haze. October to December has the clearest mountain views and crisp weather, the best time for Tiger Hill. Durga Puja and the long weekends of October bring big crowds. January–February is cold but often clear. June to September is monsoon: clouds hide the peaks, leeches appear and landslides affect roads. Searches for Darjeeling peak around October–November and April–May.
Sample 3-day Darjeeling itinerary
- Day 1 (Arrive): from Bagdogra or NJP, check in, evening walk around Chowrasta and the Mall.
- Day 2 (Morning tour): Tiger Hill at sunrise, Ghum Monastery, Batasia Loop; afternoon at the zoo and HMI, then the Peace Pagoda.
- Day 3 (Tea and toy train): Happy Valley Tea Estate, the ropeway if open, and a toy-train joy ride in the afternoon.

Practical tips
- Book Tiger Hill cars the evening before through your hotel; roads jam before dawn.
- Carry layers year-round; mornings are cold even in May.
- Buy tea from estates or reputable shops. "Darjeeling tea" sold cheaply is often blended.
- Expect power cuts and slow roads in the monsoon; keep a buffer day before flights.
- Walking the steep lanes is often faster than taxis around Chowrasta.
Plan it on Sancharees
Add Darjeeling, Tiger Hill, Mirik and Kalimpong (or Gangtok) to a Sancharees trip, keep your toy-train and hotel bookings in one place, and share the route with your family.
FAQ
How many days are enough for Darjeeling?
Two to three days covers the main sights; add a day each for Mirik, Kalimpong or a Gangtok extension.
When can you see Kanchenjunga clearly from Darjeeling?
Most often from October to December, and on many mornings in January–February and spring. Monsoon months are usually cloudy.
Is the toy train worth it?
The short joy ride from Darjeeling to Ghum is worth it for most visitors. The full journey from NJP is slow and best for railway lovers.
Darjeeling or Gangtok: which is better?
Darjeeling has tea gardens, the toy train and colonial charm; Gangtok is a cleaner, more modern base for Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim. Many trips combine both.
