Is a Eurail pass worth it? How to work it out for your trip

When a Eurail pass saves money for travellers from India and when single tickets are cheaper: how the Global Pass works, seat reservations on fast and night trains, which countries suit a pass, and a simple way to compare.

A Eurail pass is worth it if you'll take several long or spontaneous train trips in countries where reservations aren't needed, such as Switzerland, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands. It usually isn't worth it if you're mainly doing two or three high-speed trips in France, Italy or Spain that you can book weeks ahead, because cheap advance tickets there often cost less than a pass and you still pay for reservations on top.

How the pass works

  • Eurail passes are for people who don't live in Europe, so Indian residents qualify. Europeans buy the equivalent Interrail pass.
  • The Global Pass covers about 33 countries. One-country passes are cheaper if you're staying in one country.
  • You can buy a continuous pass (every day for, say, 15 days) or a flexi pass (for example, 7 travel days within a month). Flexi is better for most trips, because you won't be on a train every day.
  • The pass lives in the Rail Planner app on your phone. You activate it before the first trip and add each journey in the app.
  • Youth (under 28) and senior (60 and over) passes are cheaper. Children usually travel free or at a reduced price with an adult; check the current terms.

The catch: seat reservations

Many fast and night trains need a seat reservation even with a pass. You pay for it separately, and trains have a limited number of pass seats.

Country or train Reservation needed?
France (TGV, Intercités long distance) Yes, and pass seats sell out on busy routes
Italy (Frecciarossa, Italo not covered) Yes on high-speed trains
Spain (AVE and long distance) Yes
Eurostar (London to Paris or Brussels) Yes, with limited pass seats
Night trains Yes, plus the berth price
Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium Mostly no on regular trains

Book reservations as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for Paris, Italy and Eurostar in summer.

A quick way to decide

  1. List each train journey you're sure about, with dates.
  2. Look up the advance fare for each on the operators' own sites (SNCF Connect for France, Trenitalia for Italy, Renfe for Spain, DB for Germany, SBB for Switzerland). Add them up.
  3. Price the right pass (Global or one-country, flexi with the right number of days) and add the reservation fees for the trains that need them.
  4. If the pass total is lower, or close and you value flexibility, buy the pass. If not, book single tickets.

A typical first Europe trip, Paris to Switzerland to Italy with two or three long trains, often comes out cheaper with advance tickets. A slower trip with six or more train days around Germany, Austria and Switzerland often comes out cheaper with a pass.

Other things to know

  • In Switzerland, the Swiss Travel Pass may beat a Eurail pass, because it also covers city transport, boats and museums.
  • Mountain railways (Jungfraujoch, Gornergrat) aren't fully covered by Eurail. Expect a discount at best.
  • Budget airlines and long-distance buses (FlixBus) can be cheaper than any train for long hops such as Paris to Rome.
  • First class is often only a little more expensive with a pass and much more comfortable on busy summer trains.

Questions people ask

Can I buy the pass in India?

Yes, online on the official Eurail site or through authorised agents, and it's delivered to the app. Buy it before you go; prices are in euros.

Does it count for my Schengen visa application?

A pass isn't proof of a fixed itinerary. Consulates usually want a day-by-day plan with stays; a pass doesn't replace that.

Do I need a pass for city metros?

No. Eurail doesn't cover most city metros and trams. Buy local tickets or day passes.
