How to find cheap flights

Practical ways to find cheaper flights from India: flexible dates, nearby airports, price alerts, when to book, comparing the real total with bags, one-ways and stopovers, special fares, and common myths.

The short answer: the most reliable ways to find cheaper flights are to be flexible with dates (compare a whole month, not one day), check nearby airports, set price alerts and book when the fare dips, avoid peak holiday weeks, compare the total price with baggage and seats included, and consider two one-way tickets or a stopover. Use a search tool such as Google Flights or Skyscanner to compare, then check the airline's own site before you pay.

There is no magic day or hour that is always cheapest. Fares depend on demand. These are practical habits that tend to save money.

1. Be flexible with dates

Most search tools show a calendar or graph of fares across a month. Moving your trip by a day or two (flying on a weekday, or returning a day later) often makes a bigger difference than anything else. If your dates are fixed, at least compare morning and late-night departures.

2. Compare nearby airports

Flying from or into a different city can be cheaper even after the bus or train to get there: for example Kochi vs Thiruvananthapuram vs Coimbatore in the south, or a big hub abroad (Dubai, Doha, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok) and then a short regional flight. Most tools let you select several airports at once.

3. Set price alerts

Track the route on Google Flights, Skyscanner or an airline app and get an email or notification when the fare changes. Google Flights also shows whether the current price is low, typical or high for the route, based on past fares.

4. Book at a sensible time

  • For international trips, start watching fares a few months ahead and book when you see a good price. Waiting until the last weeks usually costs more.
  • For domestic flights in India, a few weeks ahead is often enough outside holidays; fares can jump sharply in the final days.
  • Festivals and school holidays (Diwali, Christmas–New Year, summer vacations, long weekends) push prices up. Book those trips much earlier.

5. Compare the real total

A cheap base fare can become expensive once you add check-in baggage, seat selection, meals and payment fees, especially on low-cost carriers. Compare the price for what you actually need: number of bags, preferred seats and whether you might need to change the date.

6. Try different ticket combinations

  • Two one-ways: going out on one airline and back on another can beat a return ticket.
  • Open-jaw: fly into one city and out of another (e.g. into Paris, out of Rome) instead of backtracking.
  • Stopovers: a one-stop route is often cheaper than non-stop, and some airlines allow a free or cheap stopover in their hub city.
  • Self-transfer risk: if you book separate tickets yourself, a delayed first flight won't be protected. Leave long connection times and check visa rules for the transit country.

7. Look for fares and offers you qualify for

  • Some Indian airlines offer special fares for students, senior citizens, and armed forces personnel. Check the airline's site and carry the required ID.
  • Bank card offers and airline sales can cut fares; read the conditions.
  • Airline loyalty points and credit-card reward points can be converted to flights, useful for expensive peak-season routes.

8. Book smart

  • After finding a fare on a search site, check the airline's own website. It may be the same price with easier changes and refunds.
  • Check the change and cancellation rules; a slightly pricier flexible fare can save money if your plans may change.
  • Pay with a card that has good protection, and get the e-ticket number (PNR) straight away.

Myths

  • "Clearing cookies or browsing in incognito lowers prices." There is no consistent evidence of this; fares change because seats in cheaper fare classes sell out.
  • "Tuesday is always cheapest." Mid-week flights are often cheaper, but there's no fixed rule for booking days.

After you book

  • Do online check-in early to get a free seat if one is included.
  • Use DigiYatra at participating Indian airports for faster entry.
  • Forward the booking email to your personal Sancharees forwarding address: the flight lands on the right day of your trip, with times and confirmation number, and travel companions see it too.

FAQ

When is the best time to book international flights from India?

Start watching a few months ahead, set alerts, and book when the price looks low for that route. For peak seasons, book earlier.

Are low-cost airlines always cheaper?

Not always. Once you add bags and seats, a full-service fare can cost the same or less, compare the total.

Which websites are best for cheap flights?

Use comparison tools like Google Flights and Skyscanner to search widely, then check the airline's own site and Indian booking platforms before paying.
