Japan tour package or DIY? Costs compared

A 10-day Japan package from India costs about ₹2.5–4 lakh per person; planning Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto and Osaka yourself costs about ₹1.7–2.8 lakh. Cost table, JR Pass advice and a 10-day plan.

The short answer: a 9–10 day Japan tour package from India (Tokyo, Mt Fuji or Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka) usually costs about ₹2,50,000–₹4,00,000 per person, with flights, hotels, a guide, coaches and many meals. Planning the same route yourself typically costs ₹1,70,000–₹2,80,000 per person. Japan is safe, punctual and signposted in English, so it's one of the best countries to do on your own. The package premium mostly buys a Hindi- or English-speaking guide and Indian or vegetarian meals.

All prices are approximate, per person, for two people sharing, outside cherry-blossom week and Golden Week. Check the official pages for the current visa process and rail pass prices.

What a typical Japan package includes

  • Return flights from Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru (often via another Asian hub).
  • Visa document support.
  • Hotels in Tokyo, the Fuji/Hakone area, Kyoto and Osaka, usually with breakfast.
  • A tour manager, coach transfers, a Shinkansen ride, and entries to headline sights (Senso-ji, Fushimi Inari, Nara deer park, Osaka Castle, Universal Studios as an add-on).
  • Indian or vegetarian dinners on many evenings. A real advantage in Japan, where vegetarian food takes some effort to find.

What it costs to do it yourself

Item Approximate cost per person
Return flights ₹50,000–₹95,000
Japan tourist visa A modest fee plus visa-centre charges (check the embassy/VFS page)
Hotels, 9 nights (shared; business hotels, one ryokan night) ₹45,000–₹90,000
Trains: Tokyo → Hakone → Kyoto → Osaka, local metro, IC card ₹18,000–₹30,000
Sightseeing tickets ₹6,000–₹15,000 (much more with Universal Studios or teamLab)
Food ₹25,000–₹45,000
eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi ₹1,500–₹3,000
Total about ₹1,70,000–₹2,80,000

The 7-day JR Pass became much more expensive in 2023, so for a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip, separate Shinkansen tickets are often cheaper. Price your exact route before you buy a pass.

Who should pick which

  • Pick a package if you're a strict vegetarian or Jain, travelling with elderly parents, or nervous about a country where little English is spoken outside cities.
  • Go DIY if you're comfortable with Google Maps and trains, want time in Tokyo's neighbourhoods, or want to add places like Kanazawa, Nikko or Hiroshima.

A sample 10-day DIY plan

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Tokyo; get an IC card (Suica or Pasmo) on your phone or at the station. Shibuya Crossing at night.
  2. Day 2: Asakusa and Senso-ji, Ueno, Akihabara.
  3. Day 3: Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, Shinjuku; a view from a free observation deck.
  4. Day 4: Day trip to Kamakura or Nikko.
  5. Day 5: Hakone: ropeway, Lake Ashi, views of Mt Fuji on a clear day; ryokan night.
  6. Day 6: Shinkansen to Kyoto. Gion and Kiyomizu-dera in the evening.
  7. Day 7: Fushimi Inari at dawn, Arashiyama bamboo grove.
  8. Day 8: Nara: deer park and Todai-ji.
  9. Day 9: Osaka: castle, Dotonbori street food, or Universal Studios.
  10. Day 10: Fly home from Kansai airport.

Tips

  • Late March–early April (cherry blossom) and November (autumn leaves) are beautiful but the most expensive; book hotels months ahead.
  • Use luggage-forwarding services between cities so you can ride trains light.
  • For vegetarian food, look for Indian restaurants, shojin ryori (temple food), convenience-store onigiri with plum or kelp, and apps that filter vegetarian places.
  • Carry some cash; many small shops and temples still prefer it.

FAQ

How much does a Japan trip from India cost?

About ₹1,70,000–₹4,00,000 per person for 9–10 days, depending on season, hotels and whether you choose a package.

Is the JR Pass worth it?

For a simple Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip, often not since its 2023 price rise. It can still pay off if you add long trips such as Hiroshima or Kanazawa.

Is Japan easy for vegetarians?

It's possible with planning. Packages solve it with arranged meals; on your own, use vegetarian-friendly apps and Indian restaurants in big cities.
