Kashmir tour package or DIY? Costs compared

A 6-day Kashmir package costs about ₹30,000–₹60,000 per person with flights; planning it yourself costs about ₹25,000–₹50,000. Houseboats, union taxis, gondola tickets and a 6-day plan.
The short answer: a 6-day Kashmir tour package (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, often Sonamarg) usually costs about ₹20,000–₹45,000 per person excluding flights, or ₹30,000–₹60,000 with flights. Planning it yourself costs roughly ₹25,000–₹50,000 per person including flights. The saving is small because Kashmir packages are competitively priced and local taxi rules make DIY a little more complicated, the real advantage of DIY is choosing your own houseboat and hotels.

- Airport pickup in Srinagar and a car with driver for the whole trip.
- One night on a Dal Lake houseboat plus hotels in Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, with breakfast and dinner.

- Usually not included: Gulmarg gondola tickets, pony rides, and the local union taxis you must use for sightseeing inside Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonamarg.

Who should pick which
- Pick a package on a first visit, with family, or in peak season when good hotels sell out.
- Go DIY if you've chosen a specific houseboat or hotel in Pahalgam, want an extra day for Doodhpathri or Yusmarg, or are visiting in winter for snow.
A sample 6-day DIY plan
- Day 1: Land in Srinagar; houseboat on Dal Lake; sunset shikara ride.
- Day 2: Mughal Gardens (Nishat, Shalimar), Pari Mahal, the old city.
- Day 3: Gulmarg: gondola to Kongdoori and, weather permitting, Apharwat; night in Gulmarg or back to Srinagar.
- Day 4: Drive to Pahalgam via the saffron fields of Pampore.
- Day 5: Pahalgam: Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari by union taxi, or a pony ride to Baisaran.
- Day 6: Day trip to Sonamarg on the way back, or fly home from Srinagar.
Tips
- April–June for meadows and flowers (tulip garden in spring), September–October for autumn colour, December–February for snow.
- Book gondola tickets online on the official cable car corporation site in advance; queues are long in season.
- Agree pony and taxi prices before starting. Ask your hotel for the current union rate card.
- Prepaid mobile connections from other states may not work in Jammu & Kashmir; postpaid ones usually do.
