The Coldest Night of Our New Zealand Campervan Journey

When people think about memorable travel moments, they usually imagine famous landmarks, scenic viewpoints, or bucket-list experiences.
For me, one of the most memorable moments of our New Zealand trip happened in a small campground near Albert Town, and it involved a freezing cold night, a campervan without a heater, and a beautiful morning that somehow made everything worth it.
A Day Around Wanaka
That day, we had spent our time exploring around Wanaka.
Like most visitors, we stopped by the famous Wanaka Tree. It is one of the most photographed locations in New Zealand and attracts visitors from all over the world.
Personally, while I found it beautiful, I was also surprised by how many equally stunning places New Zealand has to offer. The entire region felt like a postcard.
As the evening approached, we still hadn't decided where we would stay for the night.
One of the reasons we chose a campervan for our New Zealand trip was flexibility. We didn't want every day planned to the minute. Sometimes we simply followed the road and figured things out along the way.
After some searching, we found a campsite at Albert Town Campground.
Settling In For The Night
By the time we arrived, the sun was beginning to disappear behind the mountains.
The campground looked peaceful and welcoming.
We parked our campervan, switched on the fairy lights we carried with us, and spent some time enjoying the evening.

The temperature felt comfortable enough, perhaps around 15°C or so.
At that moment, we had absolutely no idea what the night had in store for us.
The Decision That Came Back To Haunt Me
Before travelling to New Zealand, I had spent weeks planning routes, researching attractions, and checking weather forecasts.
Most forecasts suggested temperatures between 15°C and 17°C.
When we picked up our campervan, there was an option to include a heater.
Looking at the weather forecast, I confidently decided that we wouldn't need one.
That decision seemed perfectly reasonable at the time.
Looking back, it was probably one of the biggest mistakes of our trip.
A Sky Full Of Stars
One thing I still remember vividly about that evening was the sky.
It was crystal clear.
Away from city lights, the stars seemed endless.
I spent some time taking photos of the night sky and the Milky Way.

At the time, I was simply enjoying the opportunity to photograph the stars.
What I didn't realize was that the clear sky was also allowing the temperature to drop rapidly.
The Coldest Night Of The Trip
As the night progressed, the temperature continued falling.
At first it was merely uncomfortable.
Then it became difficult to sleep.
Then it became genuinely cold.
We didn't have enough layers, and without a heater, the campervan felt colder with each passing hour.
By the early hours of the morning, sleeping was no longer an option.
Around 4 AM, I finally gave up.
I climbed into the driver's seat, started the campervan, turned the heating to the highest setting, and sat there waiting for sunrise.
The next morning I learned that the temperature had dropped to approximately -4°C.
Suddenly my decision to skip the heater didn't seem quite so clever anymore.
Morning Changed Everything
And then sunrise arrived.
The transformation was incredible.
The same campground that felt unbearably cold during the night suddenly looked magical.
A gentle stream flowed beside the campground.
Mist hovered above the water.
Ducks wandered peacefully nearby.
And to our surprise, we even spotted a few rabbits hopping through the grass.

Looking Back
Travel memories are funny.
When something goes wrong during a trip, it often feels frustrating in the moment.
Yet years later, those are often the stories we remember most.
Today, when I think about Albert Town, I don't immediately remember sitting awake at 4 AM trying to stay warm.
Instead, I remember the stars.
I remember the silence.
I remember the misty morning by the stream.
And I remember sharing that experience together.
Sometimes the most memorable travel moments aren't the ones we plan.
They're the ones that surprise us.
