Ooty tour package or DIY with the toy train?

A 3-night Ooty package costs about ₹10,000–₹22,000 per person; doing it yourself with the toy train costs about ₹7,000–₹18,000. Cost table, booking tips and a 3-day plan from Bengaluru, Chennai or Coimbatore.

The short answer: a 3-night Ooty tour package from Bengaluru, Chennai or Coimbatore usually costs about ₹10,000–₹22,000 per person, with a hotel, breakfast and a car for sightseeing (Ooty, Coonoor and sometimes Pykara). Doing it yourself costs roughly ₹7,000–₹18,000 per person. Ooty is a short, simple trip, so DIY is easy; the toy train is the one thing worth booking carefully in advance either way.

All prices are approximate, per person, for two people sharing, outside the April–June summer rush and long weekends. Check whether a Nilgiris vehicle e-pass is required for your dates before driving up.

What a typical Ooty package includes

  • A cab from Bengaluru, Mysuru, Coimbatore or Chennai (or pickup at Coimbatore airport or Mettupalayam station).
  • 3 nights in a hotel in Ooty or Coonoor, with breakfast.
  • Sightseeing by car: Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake, Doddabetta, Rose Garden, Pykara lake and falls, the Shooting Spot, and Coonoor's Sim's Park and Dolphin's Nose.
  • Sometimes a toy-train ride (subject to availability) and the Mudumalai forest drive on the Mysuru route.

A sample 3-day DIY plan

  1. Day 1: Morning toy train from Mettupalayam to Coonoor or Ooty (about 5 hours, through tunnels and tea estates). Evening at Ooty Lake.
  2. Day 2: Botanical Garden early, Rose Garden, Doddabetta; afternoon drive to Pykara lake and falls and the Shooting Spot.
  3. Day 3: Coonoor: Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock, Dolphin's Nose and a tea factory; drive down to Coimbatore or Mettupalayam.

Tips

  • Toy-train seats sell out quickly. Book on IRCTC as soon as the reservation window opens, especially for summer and weekends.
  • Avoid the April–May peak (and the May flower show weekend) if you don't like crowds; October–March is cooler and quieter.
  • The Mysuru–Ooty road through Bandipur and Mudumalai has forest check-posts that close at night; plan to cross in daylight.
  • Carry a jacket even in summer; evenings are cold.
