Ooty tourist places and how to see them in 2 or 3 days

The best places to visit in Ooty (Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake, Doddabetta, the toy train, Pykara and Coonoor) with a 3-day plan, costs, the Nilgiris e-pass and the best time to go.

The short answer: the best tourist places in Ooty are the Government Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake, Doddabetta Peak, the Rose Garden, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (the "toy train"), Pykara Lake and falls, Avalanche and Emerald lakes, and the tea estates of Coonoor nearby. Two full days cover the town and its classic viewpoints; a third day lets you add Coonoor, Kotagiri or the Mudumalai side without rushing.

Updated for 2026. Prices and timings below are approximate. Check before you go.

Ooty at a glance

Ooty (officially Udhagamandalam) is the main hill station of the Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu, at roughly 2,200 m. Days are mild most of the year and nights are cool, so it is one of South India's favourite summer escapes and a popular winter weekend trip too.

Top places to visit in Ooty

1. Government Botanical Garden

Laid out in the 1840s on terraced slopes, the garden has lawns, glasshouses, a fossilised tree trunk and hundreds of plant species. In May it hosts the annual flower show, which is the busiest week of the year in Ooty. Go early in the morning for fewer crowds.

2. Ooty Lake

A man-made lake on the edge of town with pedal, row and motor boats. It is touristy, but a morning boat ride with mist on the water is a good start to the trip. The boat house can have long queues on weekends.

3. Doddabetta Peak

The highest point in the Nilgiris (about 2,630 m), around 10 km from town. On a clear morning you can see across the plateau; by midday cloud often rolls in, so go early.

4. Rose Garden

Thousands of rose varieties on terraces above the town centre. Best from April to June, when most bushes are in bloom.

5. Nilgiri Mountain Railway (toy train)

The metre-gauge rack railway from Mettupalayam to Ooty is part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India. The climb takes about five hours through tunnels, bridges and tea country. If you have less time, ride only the upper section between Coonoor and Ooty. Seats sell out well in advance in summer and on holidays. Book on IRCTC as soon as your dates are fixed.

6. Pykara Lake and Pykara Falls

About 20 km towards Gudalur: a quieter lake with boating and a short walk to a series of cascades. Combine it with the pine forest and the Wenlock Downs grasslands ("shooting point") on the same road.

7. Avalanche and Emerald lakes

Two reservoirs south-west of Ooty in forest and grassland. Avalanche is inside a protected area and visited by forest-department vehicle; check current entry arrangements locally.

8. Coonoor and the tea country

Coonoor is 18 km down the ghat and a little warmer. Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock viewpoints, and tea-factory visits make an easy half day. Kotagiri, on the other side, has Catherine Falls and long tea-estate drives.

How to reach Ooty

  • By air: the nearest airport is Coimbatore (about 85–90 km, roughly 3 hours by road).
  • By train: take a train to Mettupalayam (the overnight Nilagiri Express runs from Chennai) or Coimbatore, then the toy train or a taxi/bus up the ghat.
  • By road from Bengaluru: about 270 km via Mysuru, Bandipur and Mudumalai. Forest check-posts on this route close at night (roughly 9 pm to 6 am), so plan to cross in daylight. The steep Kalhatti ghat via Masinagudi is shorter but has 36 hairpin bends.
  • Vehicle e-pass: since 2024 vehicles entering the Nilgiris have needed an e-pass during peak periods. Check the current rule on the Tamil Nadu government e-pass site (epass.tnega.org) before you drive up.

Best time to visit Ooty

March to June is the classic season: pleasant days, the May flower show and full gardens, and the biggest crowds. September to November is greener and quieter. December to February brings frosty mornings (light frost on the grasslands is common). The south-west monsoon (June to August) means heavy rain and occasional landslides on the ghat roads. Search interest peaks in May, December and April, so book rooms early for those months.

Sample 3-day Ooty itinerary

  1. Day 1 (Ooty town): Botanical Garden at opening time, Rose Garden, lunch in town, Ooty Lake boating in the afternoon, Charing Cross market in the evening.
  2. Day 2 (Peaks and lakes): Doddabetta at sunrise, tea museum on the way back, then the Pykara road: pine forest, Wenlock Downs, Pykara Lake and falls.
  3. Day 3 (Coonoor): toy train from Ooty to Coonoor in the morning, Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock by taxi, a tea-factory visit, and back to Ooty or down to Coimbatore.

Mid-range hotel or resort (per night) ₹3,500–₹8,000
Full-day sightseeing taxi ₹2,500–₹4,500
Toy train (one way, depends on class and section) roughly ₹50–₹600

Practical tips

  • Pack a warm layer even in summer; evenings drop sharply.
  • Weekends in April–June are crowded and traffic in town crawls. Start sightseeing early and keep the afternoon for one place.
  • Single-use plastic is restricted in the Nilgiris; carry a reusable water bottle.
  • Book the toy train early, and keep a road back-up in case of cancellations during heavy rain.
  • Drive the ghat roads in daylight and use low gear on the descent.
