Schengen countries list: the 29 countries one visa covers

All 29 Schengen countries in one table, including Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania, plus the European countries that aren't in Schengen and what "90 days in 180" means.
The short answer: the Schengen area has 29 countries: 25 EU members plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. One Schengen visa covers all of them, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The newest full members are Croatia (January 2023) and Bulgaria and Romania, which joined for air and sea travel in March 2024 and for land borders from 1 January 2025. The official list is on the European Commission's site (home-affairs.ec.europa.eu).

In Europe but not in Schengen
- Ireland (EU, not Schengen): needs its own visa. Some UK visitor visas issued in India also cover Ireland under the British Irish Visa Scheme. Check before relying on it.
- Cyprus (EU, not yet in Schengen): needs a national visa, though Cyprus has allowed some holders of valid multiple-entry Schengen visas to enter. Check the Cyprus government's current rule.
- United Kingdom: separate UK visa.
- Turkey, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Bosnia, North Macedonia, Georgia: separate rules. Several let Indians with a valid Schengen visa enter visa-free or apply for an e-visa. Check each country's official site.
- Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City aren't formally Schengen members, but have open borders with France or Italy, so you visit them on your Schengen visa.
What "90 days in 180" means
Count back 180 days from any day of your stay: you may have spent at most 90 of them in Schengen. Days in and out both count. The European Commission has an official short-stay calculator on its site if you travel often.
Planning a multi-country trip
- Apply to the country where you'll spend the most nights (see our Schengen visa guide).
- Trains link most of western Europe; budget airlines are cheaper for long hops like Paris–Rome.

Is Switzerland in Schengen?
Yes. Switzerland isn't in the EU but is a full Schengen member, so your Schengen visa covers it.
Is the UK in Schengen?
No. You need a separate UK visa.
Can I visit Croatia, Bulgaria or Romania on a Schengen visa?
Yes, all three are now full Schengen members.
