Sundarbans tour from Kolkata: how to plan it
By Ganesh ·
How to plan a Sundarbans tour from Kolkata. 2-Day and 3-day boat itineraries from Godkhali, the watchtowers, permits, package costs, how to reach and the best time to go.
The short answer: a Sundarbans tour from Kolkata is usually a 2-day/1-night or 3-day/2-night boat trip from Godkhali (Gadkhali) jetty, about three hours' drive from the city. You cruise the tidal channels of the Sundarban Tiger Reserve, stop at forest watchtowers such as Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali and Dobanki, and stay in a lodge on an island or on the boat. Permits are arranged by your operator. The best time is November to February; expect to pay roughly ₹3,000–10,000 per person for a shared package.
Prices, permits and timings below are approximate. Check before you go.
The Sundarbans at a glance
The Sundarbans is the world's largest mangrove forest, spread across the delta of the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna in India and Bangladesh. The Indian part, in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas, holds the Sundarban National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Tiger Reserve. Royal Bengal tigers here swim between islands, but they are shy and sightings are rare. Most visitors come for the landscape: silent creeks, mud flats, mangrove roots, birds, crocodiles, spotted deer and island village life.
What you see on a tour
Sajnekhali watchtower and interpretation centre
The main stop, where the forest office issues permits. It has a small museum, a mangrove nursery and a watchtower over a freshwater pond where deer and birds come to drink.
Sudhanyakhali watchtower
Known for some of the more frequent tiger sightings in the reserve, thanks to a pond in front of the tower.
Dobanki canopy walk
A raised, fenced walkway about half a kilometre long through the mangrove canopy, the closest you get to walking in the forest.
Netidhopani and Burirdabri
Netidhopani has the ruins of an ancient temple and a watchtower deep in the forest; Burirdabri has a mangrove trail along the Bangladesh border area. Both need longer cruises and specific permits, so they appear only on some 3-day itineraries.
Village life
Many tours include a walk in a village on Gosaba, Bali or Pakhiralay islands, a folk performance about Bonbibi (the forest goddess worshipped by both Hindu and Muslim islanders) and honey and fishing stories.
A sample 2-day / 1-night tour
- Day 1: Early pick-up in Kolkata; drive to Godkhali (about 3 hours); board the boat; lunch on board; Sajnekhali for permits and the watchtower; sunset cruise; overnight at a lodge on Pakhiralay or Gosaba, with a folk show.
- Day 2: Early cruise through narrow creeks; Sudhanyakhali and Dobanki; lunch on board; back to Godkhali and Kolkata by night.
A 3-day tour adds a longer day in the core area (Netidhopani or Burirdabri, when permitted) and more time in the creeks at dawn and dusk, when wildlife is most active.
What it costs (approximate, per person)
| Option | Cost |
|---|---|
| 2D/1N shared package from Kolkata (transport, boat, lodge, meals, permits) | ₹3,000–6,000 |
| 3D/2N shared package | ₹5,000–10,000 |
| Comfortable resort-based package | ₹8,000–18,000 |
| Private boat per day (whole boat) | ₹8,000–15,000 |
| Forest permit and camera fees, if not included | a few hundred rupees |
Check what's included: AC or non-AC rooms, whether the boat has a toilet, meal type (most serve Bengali fish and vegetarian food), and which watchtowers are on the plan.
How to reach
- By road: Kolkata to Godkhali jetty via Canning or Basanti, about 100 km and 3 hours. Most packages include pick-up.
- By train: Sealdah to Canning on the local train (about 1.5 hours), then shared transport to Godkhali or Sonakhali.
- By boat: from Godkhali, launches cross to Gosaba and the lodge islands.
Best time to visit
November to February: cool, dry and comfortable, with the best chance of wildlife on the banks, and the most crowded period. March to May is hot and humid but quieter. June to September is the monsoon, with rough water and fewer tours. Indian searches for Sundarban tours peak in December and January.
Practical tips
- Choose operators registered with the West Bengal forest department or tourism department.
- Bring binoculars, a hat, sunscreen, mosquito repellent and light full-sleeved clothes.
- Stay on the boat and inside fenced areas. You cannot walk in the forest, and you should never step onto the banks.
- Keep noise down; sightings depend on it.
- Don't expect a tiger: treat any sighting as a bonus.
- Add the tour to a Sancharees trip with the operator's contact and pick-up time so your family can follow along.
FAQ
Will I see a tiger in the Sundarbans?
Possibly, but sightings are rare because of the dense mangroves. You are far more likely to see deer, crocodiles, monitor lizards, kingfishers and other birds.
Is a day trip from Kolkata worth it?
It's possible but rushed. More than six hours is spent on the road. One night is much better.
Is the Sundarbans safe for families?
Yes, on a registered boat tour. Children enjoy the boat and the village visits.
Do I need a permit?
Yes, a forest entry permit, which tour operators arrange; carry ID.
