Vagamon tourist places and a 2-day plan

The best tourist places in Vagamon. The meadows, pine forest, Kurisumala, Thangalpara, the glass bridge, Marmala falls and Illikkal Kallu, with a 2-day plan, costs, how to reach and the best time to go.

The short answer: the best tourist places in Vagamon are the rolling Vagamon meadows (Mottakunnu), the pine forest, Kurisumala ashram on its hilltop, Thangalpara and Murugan Mala hills, Vagamon lake, the cantilever glass bridge at the adventure park, Marmala waterfalls, and (within an hour or so) Illikkal Kallu and Ilaveezhapoonchira. One full day covers the core sights; two days let you add the waterfalls and the nearby peaks without rushing.

Prices and timings below are approximate. Check before you go.

Vagamon at a glance

Vagamon is a small hill station on the border of Idukki and Kottayam districts in Kerala, at around 1,100 m. It has none of Munnar's tea-town bustle: instead, grassy bald hills, pine plantations, mist and quiet viewpoints. It is a popular weekend escape from Kochi and Kottayam and an easy stop between Kumarakom and Thekkady.

Top places to visit in Vagamon

1. Vagamon meadows (Mottakunnu)

Smooth green hills that look like a golf course in the clouds. Walk up for views, especially early morning when mist fills the valleys.

2. Pine forest

A plantation of tall pines on a slope by the road, a favourite for photos and film shoots. It is often crowded at midday; go early.

3. Kurisumala ashram

A Cistercian monastery known for its dairy farm, with a hilltop shrine reached by a steep walk lined with the Stations of the Cross. Keep voices low and dress modestly.

4. Thangalpara and Murugan Mala

Thangalpara has a Sufi shrine on a rock outcrop; Murugan Mala has a rock-cut temple. Together with Kurisumala, the three hills reflect Vagamon's mix of faiths.

5. Vagamon lake

A small lake ringed by tea gardens and pines, with pedal boats.

6. Glass bridge and adventure park

A cantilever glass bridge juts out over the valley at the adventure park near the meadows, alongside activities such as a giant swing and zip line. Expect queues on weekends and check the safety briefing.

7. Paragliding

The hills host tandem paragliding when the weather allows, and an occasional paragliding festival. Book only with certified operators.

8. Marmala waterfalls

A tall waterfall in the forest near Teekoy, reached by a short walk, best after the monsoon. The pool can be dangerous; don't swim.

9. Illikkal Kallu and Ilaveezhapoonchira

About an hour away, Illikkal Kallu is a dramatic rock peak with a short climb; Ilaveezhapoonchira ("the valley where leaves don't fall") is a cluster of hills with jeep rides to the top. Both are great for sunrise or sunset.

A sample 2-day plan

  1. Day 1: Arrive mid-morning; pine forest and meadows; lunch; Kurisumala ashram; sunset at Thangalpara.
  2. Day 2: Early walk on the meadows; adventure park and glass bridge; Marmala falls; continue to Illikkal Kallu or Thekkady (about 2 hours).

What it costs (approximate)

Item Budget Mid-range
Stay per night (double room) ₹1,500–3,000 ₹4,000–8,000 (resorts with valley views)
Meadows / pine forest entry small fees, roughly ₹10–50
Glass bridge roughly ₹250–500
Tandem paragliding ₹3,000–5,000
Kochi–Vagamon taxi (one way) ₹3,000–4,000

How to reach Vagamon

  • By air: Cochin International Airport, about 100–110 km (3 hours).
  • By train: Kottayam station, about 65 km (2 hours by road via Erattupetta).
  • By bus: KSRTC from Kottayam and Erattupetta; a taxi or own car is far more convenient for sightseeing.

Best time to visit Vagamon

September to March has clear, cool weather and green meadows after the rains. April and May are mild and busy with families escaping the heat. June to August is very wet and misty. Beautiful, but viewpoints may be clouded in and the waterfall trails slippery.

Practical tips

  • Carry a jacket; evenings are cool.
  • Food options are limited outside resorts. Eat lunch when you see a good place.
  • Mobile signal can be patchy; download offline maps.
  • Vagamon fits neatly into a Kerala loop between Kumarakom/Kottayam and Thekkady. Put it in your Sancharees trip to see drive times and keep the whole plan viewable offline.

FAQ

Is one day enough for Vagamon?

For the meadows, pine forest, Kurisumala and Thangalpara, yes. Stay a night to see sunrise and add the waterfalls.

Vagamon or Munnar?

Munnar is bigger, with tea estates and more sights; Vagamon is smaller, quieter and less commercial.

Is Vagamon good in the monsoon?

If you like mist and rain, yes, but expect cloud on the viewpoints and drive carefully.
