Vietnam e-visa for Indians, step by step
By Ganesh ·
How Indians apply for the official Vietnam e-visa. Up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, the fee, entry points, avoiding lookalike sites and a 10-day route.
The short answer: Indians need a visa for Vietnam, and the easiest way is the official e-visa. Since August 2023 Vietnam's e-visa allows stays of up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, for all nationalities. Apply online on the Vietnam Immigration Department's official portal (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn), pay the government fee by card (about US$25 for single entry and US$50 for multiple entry at recent rates), and print the approved e-visa.
Many lookalike websites sell Vietnam e-visas at a big markup. Use the official portal (the Embassy of Vietnam in New Delhi publishes the correct address) and check the current fee there. This guide is general information, not legal advice.
Step by step
- Prepare a scan of your passport bio page and a recent passport-style photo (plain background, no glasses).
- Fill in the form on the official portal: entry and exit dates, the airport or border gate you'll enter through, and your address in Vietnam.
- Pay the fee online and note your registration code.
- Check the status with your code and email. Download and print the approved e-visa.
- Check every detail: name, passport number, dates, entry point. Mistakes can mean a fresh application.
Costs (approximate)
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| E-visa, single entry (up to 90 days) | About US$25 |
| E-visa, multiple entry (up to 90 days) | About US$50 |
| Agent "expedite" services | Optional, often far more expensive |
| Return flights to Hanoi / Ho Chi Minh City (now with direct flights from several Indian cities) | ₹20,000–₹40,000 |
Single or multiple entry?
Choose multiple entry if you'll leave and re-enter Vietnam, for example a side trip to Cambodia's Angkor Wat or Laos. Otherwise single entry is enough.
Entry points
The e-visa names the airport, land border or seaport where you'll enter. The main airports (Hanoi Noi Bai, Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat, Da Nang) and many land borders are on the list. Pick the one you'll actually use; entering elsewhere can cause problems.
A 10-day north-to-south idea
- Hanoi (2 nights) → Ha Long Bay cruise (1 night)
- Da Nang and Hoi An (3 nights)
- Ho Chi Minh City (2 nights) and a day in the Mekong Delta

When to apply
Searches for Vietnam trips from India peak in December and January. Apply a few weeks before you fly, and allow extra time around Tet (Lunar New Year), when offices close for several days.
FAQ
Can Indians get a Vietnam visa on arrival?
Arrange the e-visa before you fly. Older "visa on arrival approval letter" schemes sold by agents are not the official e-visa.
How long can I stay on a Vietnam e-visa?
Up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, for the dates you apply for.
Is the official Vietnam e-visa site safe?
Yes. Use the government portal whose address ends in.gov.vn. Avoid sites that look similar but charge extra.
Do I need travel insurance for Vietnam?
It isn't required for the e-visa, but it's a good idea, especially for motorbike trips in the north.
