Getting started with Sancharees: plan your first trip

Create your first trip in Sancharees: set the dates and countries, add stops to each day, watch the route draw on the map, or let Plan a trip draft a day-by-day itinerary for you.

Sancharees is a trip planner built around two things: a map and your days. Every stop, hotel and flight hangs off a day, and every day shows up on the map in its own colour. This guide walks you through your first trip, from an empty page to a day-by-day plan you can actually follow.

Two ways to start

From My trips you can begin in one of two ways:

  • New trip starts a blank trip that you fill in yourself.
  • Plan a trip asks for your countries and dates and drafts a whole itinerary for you, which you can then edit like any other trip.

We will start with a blank trip, then look at Plan a trip further down.

Create a trip by hand

  1. On My trips, click New trip.
  2. Give it a Trip title, for example "Kerala in the monsoon", and click Start planning. The trip editor opens.
  3. On the trip card at the top of Overview, click the dates to open Trip dates and pick your first and last day. Sancharees creates one day for each date.
  4. Pick your countries. The country picker searches the full list of countries by name or code, so typing "holland" or "turkiye" works. Your countries appear as small flag chips beside the stop count; click them any time to change the list.

If your plans change later, edit the trip dates again. Stops, notes, hotels and bookings move together with the days. If shortening the trip would leave stops on days that no longer exist, we ask before doing anything: stops go back to your wishlist rather than disappearing.

Add stops to your days

Each day in the itinerary has an Add a place box. Start typing a place name and pick it from the suggestions. Search copes with half-remembered names and favours places near the stops you already have, so "fort koch" will find Fort Kochi rather than somewhere on the other side of the world. Many places come with a photo, which is attached to the stop for you.

A few things you can do with stops:

  • Reorder them by dragging, or move a stop to another day.
  • Add notes to a stop, such as opening times, ticket details or a link. Links in notes become clickable.
  • Use Add note or Add checklist beside Add a place for things that belong to the day rather than a single stop, like "buy SIM card" or a packing list.
  • Places you want to see but have not scheduled yet can sit in your wishlist until you find them a day.

Made a mistake? An Undo toast appears after deletes and moves, and Cmd/Ctrl+Z works too.

Watch it on the map

As you add stops, the map draws your route. Each day has its own colour, stops are numbered in visiting order, hotels get a bed icon and flights a plane. When the trip opens you see every route at once; move to a day and the map glides over to it while the other days fade back.

Between stops the itinerary shows the travel time and distance, and a Directions link that opens Google Maps for that leg. Click the mode icon to switch a leg between cab, drive, walk, train and so on. Each day header also has Open in Google Maps for the whole day's route.

If a day gets crowded, a Packed day warning tells you when travel plus time at stops runs past about 12 hours.

Let Plan a trip draft it for you

Not sure where to begin? Use Plan a trip:

  1. Choose one or more Countries.
  2. Set the Start and End dates (up to 21 days).
  3. Optionally add a Starting city.
  4. Pick a Pace (relaxed, moderate or full) and your Interests, such as food, nature, cities, beaches or travelling with kids.
  5. Click Plan my trip.

After a short wait the trip opens in the editor with stops, stays for each night, the hops between cities and day notes already filled in. Every place is a real, searchable place, and flights and hotels are saved as drafts, not bookings. Change anything you like.

Once you have built a few trips yourself, Plan a trip offers Plan it the way I travel, which shapes the draft around your own habits: how many stops you usually fit in a day, how far you travel and how many nights you stay in one place.

How a day reads

Each day in Sancharees reads as one timeline, top to bottom, in the order you will live it:

  1. Day starts from last night's hotel, with your check-out time if you are leaving.
  2. The stops you visit before any flight or train.
  3. The ride to the airport, then the flight with its departure and arrival times.
  4. The ride from the arrival airport and the stops you see there.
  5. Tonight, with your check-in time at the new hotel.

Hotels and flights get onto this timeline when you add them as bookings. The easiest way to do that is to forward your confirmation emails, which we cover in our guide to the booking inbox.

Tip: on a phone, the Overview, Itinerary, Expenses and Journal tabs give you the same trip in a layout made for small screens. While you are on the trip, the Today card shows the current day's stops and bookings.
